Anyone here ever shot or owned a Makarov pistol?

If so, how did you like it (or dislike it)?

I am looking at one for sale right now and am pondering a purchase, but have zero experience with these and could use some input. Thoughts?

Thnx/7

I have a Bulgarian Makarov that I bought a few years ago. It's a great little pistol, very accurate amd reliable. The double action trigger pulls can vary from pistol to pistol with some being decent and some being downright horrible. They are great pistols in every other respect though. They are built like tanks. You can't wear one out. I only have one and wish I had bought a truckload of them back when they were 150 bucks. What's the asking price on the one you are looking at? I've seen them priced as high as $300.00 in my neck of the woods recently.

From what Ive seen of them, they are very well built little handguns, very reliable, with the punch of a .380

I had a chance to buy a real Russian one about 10 years ago for $169.00 and I wish I had done it.

I own a Bulgarian and a Russian mil version. Had an East German but sold it. The Mak is an excellent pistol for personal protection and built to last. As you probably know, it was the standard issue mil sidearm for the USSR and the eastern bloc for many years. The 9x18 round is more than adequate for self defense and ammo is still fairly cheap. The Mak is easy to field strip and clean, and the steel frame and slide will take a lot of abuse. Stay away from the Polish 9x18. It is crap. I've got some spare magazines if you end up buying one.

Hi,I have several and bought them when they were cheap. The East Germans are usually around $300-$350.Chinese Bulgarians etc are usually less. Most of these pistols were around $200.00 and were in "new" condition.Recently CZ 82 were imported at around $200.00 and are a great bargin. Not Makarovs but are the same caliber. The 9x18 round is between a 380 (95 gr bullet 955 fps MV)and the 9mm (115 gr bullet 1160 fps MV).the 9x18 is Muzzle Velocity 95 gr bullet at 1060 fps. I'm not going to trade in my Colt 1911 but for a resonable price the Mak's can't be beat.Just remember to stock up on 9 x 18 ammo it can be hard to find in certain areas. You pistol will also digest steel cased ammo; though i perfer brass cases. Hope this helps.Regards,Mike

I have one. Very happy with it. Did have a problem with the steel cased ammo and jamming so I stick with brass cased and there's no issues.

Own two commercial Bulgarian and one E.G. model. Very nice to shoot. The attached link will make Mak and Tok lovers cringe.
Take care,

I have one and my buddy at work has one. I like it because its a pistol I can take fishing with me and if it gets wet it cleans up real easy or if I dropped it in the lake or river and lost it I wouldn't be to hard up about it.

FWIW The FEG copy a PA63 is a great gun as well. Fires the same round and in like new condition can be found from places like SOG and J&G for 99 bucks.

I'm a big fan of the makarov and it's clones.

Lots of good info here, many thanks. The one I'm eyeballing is around $375, so I may keep looking. Thanks also to brother P for the PA 63 info, as I just saw one of those for sale, too, and it had me wondering as well...

Safe & happy shooting, fellas...

375 wow, my buddy at work told me he saw one in classifieds of the gun rag we get for the gun show/club we belong to for 300 and that was w/ 8 or 10 mags. I'd keep looking.

I bought my Makarov new in 2004 for $150.00 and it came with four mags. I love Makarovs, but there's no way in heck I'd pay $375.00 for one. I also have a CZ82 9x18 that I bought about a year ago for $225.00. If Maks are that high now, I'd go with the PA-63 also. I may check them out myself before they go up in price too. They'll eventually be $300.00 also, just like everything else.

Holy Crap! PA-63's are now $159.99 at Centerfire systems. After paying shipping and FFL fees, one of those would now be around $200.00.

Here's a link. http://www.centerfiresystems.com/PA-63.aspx

I didn't realize how much all these things had gone up recently.

Here's a link for ammo for it. http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.c...dir=18|829|836

Here's a link to one at J&G sales for $129.95. http://www.jgsales.com/product_info....oducts_id/1258

The ones at Centerfire Systems are listed as excellent condition with 2 mags. The ones at J&G are listed as very good condition with only one mag.

Here is a link for extra mags for the PA-63 http://www.cdnninvestments.com/pa9xtumagus.html

Ditto these comments in case you haven't decided to buy or found the right deal yet. If you find it boxed it should come with a cleaning rod, extra grip plate and nifty leather holster. Nabbed mine a few years ago for $165 and should have bought at least one more. It's pretty much the wife's at this point and frankly she treats it much better than needed. Even caught her cleaning it not long ago (simple to do) and she hasn't shot since the last cleaning. Anyway, a nice addition. Good luck. :565: Also, finding ammo has never been an issue.
